George Mason dropped its second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse game to start its conference schedule as No. 8 Towson scored the final eight goals of the game to take an 18-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md.
George Mason's overall record drops to 3-8 with the loss. The Tigers improve to 8-3 overall and 2-1 against conference opponents with the win.
After the Tigers built a quick 2-0 lead in the opening 1:21 of the first half, sophomore midfielder Emily Ellisen narrowed the Patriots' deficit to 2-1 on a free-position shot with 28:08 left in the period.
However, the Tigers ran off four straight goals over a four-minute span to take a commanding 6-1 advantage with 23:19 remaining in the first half. Jacie Kendall scored a goal and added an assist during the spurt. Kendall finished with five goals in the game to lead all players.
Sophomore attacker Julianne Tela ended the Tigers' run with her first goal of the season off a pass from junior midfielder Chelsea Gamble with 21:54 remaining. The Tigers responded by ending the first half with three unanswered goals to take a 9-2 lead at the intermission.
Gamble and junior attacker Madalyn Jamison scored back-to-back goals to open the second half to narrow the margin to 9-4 with 25:31 remaining. With 23:16 left, senior midfielder Hillary Fratzke scored to give Towson a 10-4 advantage before Ellisen answered just 24 seconds later with her second goal of the game.
After closing within five goals, the Patriots were unable to get any closer. The Tigers held George Mason scoreless for the final 22 minutes and scored eight unanswered goals to seal the victory. Kendall and senior midfielder Nikki Marcinik each had two goals during the spurt for the Tigers.
Ellisen led the Patriots with two goals while Gamble added a goal and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Sara Longobucco made 14 saves for the Patriots.
While Kendall led the Tigers with her career-high six-point effort on Sunday, Marcinik added a career-high five-point effort with two goals and a career-high three assists. Fratzke finished with three goals and two assists.
George Mason wraps up its three-game road trip on Tuesday night at fifth-ranked Virginia. The opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m.
