The George Mason track and field team added six new IC4A/ECAC qualifiers as the Patriots hosted their annual Mason Spring Invitational meet on Saturday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
Five of the six qualifiers came on the men's side, while the women added one new qualifier in the 4x100-meter relay of Crystalyne Clark, Cierra McGee, Marie Fields and Tiara Swindell, which finished second with a time of 46.17, the fastest by any Mason relay in that event this season. McGee improved upon her previous ECAC qualification in the 400-meter dash, crossing the line in a first-place time of 55.36 which bested her previous mark by half a second.
Swindell met the qualifying standard in the 200-meter dash with her second-place time of 24.67, 0.07 seconds off her season-best mark at the Mason Quadrangular. Grace Mavugara also met the ECAC standard with a mark of 12.17 meters in the triple jump, shy of her season-best distance of 12.31 meters achieved at last week's Florida Relays.
For the men, two qualifiers came in the 400-meter dash, as freshmen David Verburg and George Empty finished one-two with times of 47.62 and 48.06, respectively. In the 800-meter dash, Chris Carrington marked his second IC4A berth with his third-place time of 1:50.90. Verburg and Carrington each qualified for the USATF Junior Championships with their times, which will be held June 23-27 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
In the long and triple jumps, the Patriots had IC4A qualifiers in Dwight Webley who finished first with a leap of 7.35 meters, as well as LaVell Handy's second-place distance of 14.70 meters.
Rounding out the qualifiers for the Patriots were Handy's time of 14.48 in the 110-meter hurdles, a time which met the IC4A standard but fell short of his season-best time of 14.27 at the Raleigh Relays. Finally, Mason added another first-place finish with Daniel Callan's season-fastest time of 9:23.44 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The Patriots will be back in action next Saturday, traveling to both the James Madison Invitational in Harrisonburg and the Michael Johnson Classic in Waco, Texas.
