FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason lost to No. 2 Maryland by a final score of 16-4 in nonconference women's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon at George Mason Stadium. Senior goalkeeper Sara Longobucco recorded 18 saves in the loss.

The loss snapped Mason's two-game winning streak and dropped the Patriots' overall record to 2-3 this season. Maryland won its fifth straight contest to start the season.

George Mason fell behind early as the Terrapins scored 10 unanswered goals to begin the game. The Patriots got on the board with 2:33 left in the first half when senior attacker Megan Udovich scored her first goal of the game. Udovich scored again 18 seconds later to cut the deficit to eight. Maryland added to its lead with 21 seconds remaining in the half when freshman Alex Aust found an open Brittany Jones for the score.

Trailing 11-2, Mason sophomore midfielder Emily Ellisen scored the first goal of the second half to again cut the deficit to eight. The Patriots were unable to get any closer, though, as the Terps scored five consecutive goals to push the lead to 16-3. Mason junior Chelsea Gamble netted the final goal of the game with 17 seconds remaining.

Udovich led George Mason with two goals in the game. Longobucco faced constant pressure from the Maryland attack, which took a total of 39 shots. The senior from Sea Cliff, N.Y. set a new career high with 18 saves in 60 minutes of action.

Senior Caitlyn McFadden led the way for the Terps with three goals and four assists for seven points. McFadden also recorded three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Sophomore Karri Ellen Johnson finished with two goals, two assists and four draw controls.

George Mason returns to action on Tuesday, March 16 when the Patriots host Colgate at George Mason Stadium. The opening draw is slated for 7 p.m.
