OCCOQUAN, Va. - The novice four led the way for the George Mason rowing team at Sunday's Occoquan Sprints, finishing as medalist. The Patriots varsity four finished 4th, varsity eight finished 7th overall and first in the petite final, and the second varsity eight boat finished 6th in their races on the Occoquan Reservoir.
"Overall I was pleased with our results," said Head Coach Geoff Dillard. "This was our first official race of the season and gave us a chance to see where we are at. I think we had some bright spots, but have lots of room for improvement."
"I think we made some adjustments in the varsity 8 and that benefited us in the final. The 2nd varsity 8 raced well in the heat, but need to be able to repeat that performance in the final. We will learn from this weekend and look to improve next week at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia," added Dillard.
"The novice four had a great first outing on Sunday," said assistant coach Ellen Gallagher. "Even though they hadn't spent much time in that line-up, they approached the race with a great, ready-for-anything, attitude. Their enthusiasm really paid off. We are very pleased with our novice rowers."
"The Varsity four raced well against a very strong field. They made great improvements from practice to race-day and have set themselves up for a great spring," added Gallagher.
The Patriots will race in the Murphy Cup on Saturday in Philadelphia.
