FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason softball team closed out its 21-game homestand on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Georgetown, and the Hoyas stifled the Patriot offense as GU took both games of the twinbill, 12-0 and 4-0.
Mason dropped to 8-13 on the season following the losses while Georgetown improved to 12-16.
In game one, Mason managed just one hit against GU's pitching staff while the Hoyas racked up an early lead to earn the run-rule victory. Georgetown took advantage of two Mason errors in the first inning and plated five runs, including a pair of two-RBI singles by Mackensey Carter and Jillian Webb.
After a scoreless second, three more Hoya runs were added in the top of the third to make it 8-0. Mason broke up the no-hitter in the bottom half when sophomore Tori Dudley singled to shortstop with two outs. She was also the first baserunner of the game when she was struck by a pitch in the bottom of the first.
Mason managed just one more runner in the game as sophomore Alyssa See followed Dudley with a third-inning walk. Meanwhile, Georgetown added a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth inning.
Carter earned the win and improved to 4-9 after allowing the hit in three innings of work, while Mason's Amanda Buffington (2-2) took the loss, allowing six earned runs in the freshman's complete-game effort.
In the nightcap, the Mason offense continued to have trouble, amassing three hits while Jennifer Connell (5-5) struck out 12 Patriot batters in earning the win.. Sophomore Miranda Cranford had a strong outing, allowing just one earned run in six innings of work.
Webb's pinch-hit, two-RBI single to right field opened the scoring in the second inning and an RBI single by McKinley Cooper in the fourth made it 3-0. The final Georgetown run came in the sixth, an RBI hit through the right side by Demetria Cipriano. In the game, the Patriots advanced just one runner into scoring position, when senior Kate Bustin led off the sixth inning with a bunt single and was sacrificed to second. She, along with freshman Emily Lafferty and See each had a hit in the game.
Mason will be back in action this weekend when it hits the road for the first time, traveling to Colonial Athletic Association foe Hofstra for a Friday-Saturday series.
