George Mason senior shortstop Ryan Soares has been one of the top hitters in the Colonial Athletic Association this season and he has drawn some notice on the national level. On Tuesday morning, he was one of 54 shortstops named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, which is given to the nation's top shortstop.
When the list was compiled, Soares led all players with a .500 batting average. The senior, who played second base the previous two seasons before shifting to shortstop for this year, is currently batting .446 with four homers, 24 RBI, 19 runs scored and an .875 slugging percentage heading into Tuesday's game against Richmond. He has made just two errors this season in 66 chances.
Soares is one of two CAA players on the Wallace Watch List. Georgia State's Carl Moniz is also among the 54 players. The list will be revised on May 6 with semifinalists announced on June 10 and the finalists on June 19 in Omaha, Neb. at the College World Series. The award will be presented on July 2.
