Game Two Box Score
FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason softball team used potent offense and solid pitching to take two games from Morgan State on Sunday afternoon, completing a four-game series sweep of the Bears at George Mason Softball Complex.
Mason improved to 7-7 as it recorded 4-3 and 5-1 victories on the day over the Bears (4-10).
In the first game of the day, the Patriots opened the scoring first in the third inning as Katie Rynex drove a base hit through the middle of the infield. Morgan State answered right back in the top of the fourth, using a bases-loaded fielding error by the Patriots to knot the game at 1-1.
Three straight hits by the Patriots in the bottom half, though, led to two runs. Senior Becky Anderson doubled to left field scoring Rachael Davies who singled to lead off the inning. Anderson came around to score on a base hit that slid through the right side by Kara Weiner.
Once again, the Bears answered back as they put up two runs in the top of the fifth. An RBI groundout by Porsche Boddicker was followed by a Tamara Griffin RBI single to make the score 3-3. However, it would be the last time that Morgan State dented the scoreboard.
In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Davies' one-out RBI single through the right side scored the game-winning run, as Rynex came around to score from second to make the score 4-3.
Morgan State mustered just one more base-runner in the final two innings, allowing Miranda Cranford to pick up her third victory of the season, after coming in for three innings of relief. Freshman Amanda Buffington started and tossed four innings, allowing one run on four hits.
Davies was one of three Patriots with a multi-hit game, as Rynex and Weiner each went 2-for-3. Griffin led the Bear offense going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In the second game, the Patriots again jumped on the lead with two runs in the third inning. Rynex lined a double off the base off the left-center field wall which scored Caitlin Stauffer and Davies placed a base hit into center to allow Rynex to come home from second.
Mason added another run in the next inning when Daria Siwczak scored on a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of Doiron. The Bears cut the deficit to 3-1 in the sixth inning when Boddicker hit an RBI single, but the Patriots answered back with two runs in the bottom half on another Rynex RBI double and a sac fly by Megan Blank.
Anderson threw a complete game to earn the win, allowing one run on four hits while fanning six. Megan Johnson took the loss after giving up the first three Mason runs in four innings of work.
The Patriots will be back in action on Wednesday when they host local rival Howard for a 4 p.m. contest at the George Mason Softball Complex.
