FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason track and field team opened up its outdoor season at home on Saturday at its Quadrangular meet, tallying four ECAC/IC4A qualifications as the men finished second while the women placed fifth.
Mason captured a total of eight first-place finishes and saw three women reach the ECAC qualifying mark. Freshman Mandissa Marshall cleared a height of 3.80 meters to win the pole vault and earn a spot in the ECACs. In the women's 200-meter dash, Marie Fields and Tiara Swindell finished one-two, both eclipsing the ECAC qualifying standard with times of 24.56 and 24.60, respectively.
On the men's side, sophomore LaVell Handy was victorious in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 14.51 to surpass the IC4A qualifying time. Kevin Hegel won the men's high jump with a height of 2.00 meters, while Travaughn Baker-Johnson's leap of 6.44 meters won the long jump competition.
Freshman George Empty crossed the line in the 400-meter dash with a first-place time of 48.66 while Parker Boudreau led a trio of Patriot top finishers in the 3,000-meter run with his time of 8:27.26. Finally, on the women's side the Patriots' 4x400-meter relay earned the top time with a finish of 3:54.73.
Mason is back in action next weekend when the Patriots travel to N.C. State to take part in the Raleigh Relays on Friday and Saturday.
