Despite an impressive effort from junior attacker Madalyn Jamison, the George Mason women's lacrosse team was unable to pull out a victory on Tuesday evening at George Mason Stadium, falling by a final score of 9-7 to Colgate. Jamison finished with two goals and four assists for a total of six points in the loss.
The loss drops Mason's season record to 2-4. Colgate improved to 3-4 with the win, its second straight after defeating American on March 13.
The Raiders got on the board first when sophomore Courtney Miller found the back of the net just 1:08 into the contest. The lead was short-lived for the visitors, though, as the Patriots scored back-to-back goals to take their first and only lead of the night. Junior attacker Callie Hoyt scored with 26:57 remaining in the half to tie the score at one, and sophomore attacker Mary Schwartz added a goal three minutes later to give Mason the lead. Jamison assisted on both scores.
After Mason took the lead, Colgate answered with a 4-1 run over the final 23:34 of the half to take a 5-3 lead into the 10-minute intermission. Miller scored her second goal of the game with 1:28 left in the half to cap the scoring spurt.
Following the break, the Patriots scored the first two goals of the second half to tie the score at five. Schwartz scored her second goal of the game a minute into the half, and sophomore Emily Ellisen added to her team-leading goal total with her first score of the evening with 28:06 remaining in the contest.
Colgate responded with two goals of its own to regain the lead. The Raiders' Colleen Bubnack scored once off a free-position shot and added another off an assist from Meghan Lawler to give Colgate a 7-5 lead.
Jamison responded with a free-position goal with 16:03 left to cut the deficit to a single goal. However, the Patriots were unable to get any closer as Colgate outscored Mason 2-1 over the final 15:41 to account for the final score.
Hoyt and Schwartz tied for the team lead with Jamison with two goals each. Junior midfielder Chelsea Gamble sparked Mason's defensive unit with four caused turnovers. Junior Hayley Berger added three. Junior Caitlin Hoffen led the Patriots with five ground balls.
Four players scored twice for the Raiders - Bubnack, Meghan Lawler, Miller and Kate Sullivan. Miller added an assist, three caused turnovers, four ground balls and three draw controls. Sophomore goalkeeper Christina Roa earned her third win this season with 13 saves in 60 minutes.
George Mason hits the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, March 24 to take on American in Washington, D.C. The opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
