Box Score

Newport News, Va. - The George Mason baseball team salvaged its three-game series with Georgetown on Sunday but not before having to withstand a big rally from the Hoyas. In the end, though, the Mason bullpen was up to the task, holding off Georgetown 9-8 at Christopher Newport. The Patriots had dropped both games in a doubleheader the day before with both contests going to extra innings.

Mason fell behind 1-0 on Sunday but scored once in the bottom of the first and three times in the bottom of the second. After Georgetown cut the Mason lead to 4-3 in the third, the Patriots scored five times in the next three innings to go ahead 9-3. A two-run homer in the sixth made it 9-5 and in the eighth, another pair scored to make it 9-7. The Hoyas managed to make it 9-8 with the tying run on third but they couldn't get the run across.

Mason will return to action on Tuesday when the Patriots travel to Richmond for a 3 p.m. game.
