Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Georgetown

Newport News, Va. - The George Mason baseball team played a doubleheader against Georgetown on Saturday at Christopher Newport and in both games the Patriots scored runs in their last at-bat to force extra innings only to lose in the first extra frame as the Hoyas beat Mason 5-4 in an eight-inning game and 8-4 in a 10-inning contest.

Mason (3-3) played as the visiting team in the first game, a seven-inning affair. The Patriots scored twice in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead and put Kevin Crum in line for the win. The senior had allowed just six hits and three runs in three innings. But freshman Anthony Montefusco couldn't close things out as Georgetown (4-1) scored in the bottom of the seventh then pushed one across in the bottom of the eighth to earn the win. Ryan Soares was 3 for 4 in the game while Mark Hill was 3 for 4 with an RBI.

In the second game, Ryan Brecko pitched well for five and one-third innings before giving way to Jack Zeltner who threw two and two-third no-hit innings. Darren McLean pitched a scoreless ninth and in the bottom of the inning, with Mason trailing 4-2, Soares hit a two-run homer to force the extra innings. In the 10th, the Hoyas scored four times off of Ryan Pfaeffle to take earn the sweep. Soares was 3 for 5 while Hill was 2 for 4.

Mason and Georgetown will play one more time this weekend as they meet at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Kris Mengle will start for the Patriots who will play as the home team.
