The George Mason baseball team rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to overtake Marist and beat the Red Foxes 3-2 in the 2010 Bojangles Baseball Classic hosted by Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. The win improved Mason to 2-0 on the season.
Mason wasted no time in the ninth first tying the game then winning as Ryan Soares and Shane Davis led off with singles and Mark Hill beat out a sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Josh Steinberg walked to make it 2-2 and Brett Hendricks singled down the leftfield line to bring home the game winner.
Darren McLean picked up the win after pitching a perfect top of the ninth with two strikeouts. Kris Mengle had gone eight innings allowing just four hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Hill was 3 for 3 in the game as Mason was held to just seven hits.
The game was scoreless in the fourth when a walk, a single and a double made it a 2-0 Marist lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Mason got a run back as Hill led off with a double, took third on a Hendricks ground out and scored on a Chris Cook single. Mason nearly tied the score in the eight when, with two outs, Cook was hit by a pitch and Nick Allen walked. The runners advanced on a wild pitch but Dan Schafferman struck out looking to end the game.
The Patriots will have no rest, retaking the field later today for a game against Winthrop.
