Patriot Pole Vaulters Qualify for the IC4A Championships

BLACKSBURG, Va. - A pair of Patriot pole vaulters qualified for the IC4A Championships at the Virginia Tech Challenge, held at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. on Friday and Saturday.

Zak Sisak and Lee Oxenford both finished in the top five in the pole vault. Sisak and Oxenford reached the IC4A Championships by reaching a height of 4.80 meters (15 ft. 9 in.).

Both Rachaunn Ruffin and Nick Vaughn finished second and third in the 200-meter dash. Ruffin matched his top time this season with a time of 21.64 seconds while Vaughn crossed the finish line with his best time of the season, clocking in at 21.76 seconds.

Three Patriots finished in the top-10 in the 400-meter dash. Vaughn finished sixth with an indoor personal best time of 47.91, Ja-Vell Bullard finished seventh (48.20) and David Verburg finished eighth (48.51). All three times topped the IC4A-qualifying standard.

In the 600-meter dash, Kevin Wilson topped the field with a time of 1:19.96. The time was Wilson's best of the season in the event.

LaVell Handy finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with an IC4A-qualifying time of 8.17 seconds. Handy advanced to the finals with a time of 8.19 seconds in the preliminary heats. Handy also topped the IC4A-qualifying standard in the triple jump with a mark of 15.10 meters (49 ft. 6.5 in.) to finish fourth in the event.

On the women's side, Cierra McGee finished in fourth place in the finals of the 60-meter dash, crossing the finish line in an ECAC-qualifying time and indoor personal best time of 7.64 seconds. McGee reached the finals with a time of 7.74 seconds in the preliminary heats.

In the 200-meter dash, both Marie Fields and Tiara Swindell qualified for the ECAC Championships. Fields finished in 10th place with an indoor personal best time of 25.01 seconds, while Swindell finished a spot behind her teammate in 11th place with a time of 25.02 seconds.

Swindell also finished in the top-five in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 54.63 seconds, which set a new personal best for the indoor season for the senior. McGee crossed the finish line two places behind her with a time of 56.07 seconds. Both Swindell and McGee previously qualified for the ECAC Championships in the event.

Two Patriots qualified for the ECAC Championships in the distance events. Freshman Laura Sinclair finished in fourth place in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:51.78. Sophomore Sandy Castro crossed the finish line in third place in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:29.80.

In the pole vault, Mandissa Marshall matched her top vault of the season with a mark of 3.75 meters (12 ft. 3.5 in.). Marshall previously reached that height at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.

Grace Mavugara once again reached the NCAA provisional qualifier in the triple jump. Mavugara finished third with a leap of 12.84 meters (42 ft. 1.5 in.).

In the relay races, Mason's women's team finished in second-place with an ECAC-qualifying time of 3:43.06. The men's team nearly reached an NCAA provisional qualifier with a second place finish in 3:10.87.

George Mason hosts its final meet of the indoor season, the Mason Last Chance meet, on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m. at the Field House.
