Cam Long, a junior men's basketball player and Kristen Meier, a sophomore diver, both had terrific months in January and for their accomplishments, they were named the George Mason Female and Male Athletes of the Month for December.

Long, who was named preseason first-team All-CAA, had one of the best stretches by a Mason player in the past five years. In a five game span, he scored 20 or more points four times and was named CAA Player of the Week leading Mason on a seven-game winning streak, the third-longest under head coach Jim Larranaga. The native of Palm Bay, Fla. averaged 16.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists while shooting 52.1 percent from the field and 45.9 percent from 3-point range. He tied his career high with 24 points at James Madison, then followed that up with 27 points and a career-high seven assists at Hofstra. He scored 21 at Towson, 18 against Delaware and 23 against James Madison to close out the month.

Meier continued her dominance over Colonial Athletic Association women's divers as she captured a total of four first-place finishes in four tries. At Towson, she had scores of 293.18 in the 1-meter and 329.55 in the 3-meter, the latter a season-best. For her efforts she was named the CAA's Diver of the Week, her sixth such award this season. The Walden, N.Y., native was a winner in both events in the quad meet against American, Army and Old Dominion as well. She closed out the month by competing against George Washington in exhibition action.

This is the second Student-Athlete of the Month award for each. Long previously earned the honor last January while Meier took home the award this past October.

The previous winners of the Male Student Athlete of the Month award are Sean Kelley (Sept., men's soccer), Eric Knight (Oct., men's swimming and diving), Luke Hancock (Nov., men's basketball) and Mendbagaba Tovuujav (Dec., wrestling) while the previous winners this year of the Female Student Athlete of the Month award are Tiana Kallenberger (Sept., women's soccer), Meier (Oct., women's swimming and diving), Holly Goode (Nov., women's volleyball) and Amber Easter (Dec., women's basketball).
