Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Profile -- Becky Anderson
OVERLAND PARK, Ks. - George Mason senior pitcher Becky Anderson has been selected among the group of 30 candidates for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for softball, announced Wednesday. The Oakton, Va., native joins a group of seniors who have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, character, community and competition.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of classroom, character, community and competition.
Anderson is set to begin her fourth year with the Patriots softball team, where she has been one of the most successful pitchers in program history. She has twice been named to the All-CAA First Team and was an All-Rookie selection her freshman year from the pitcher's circle. Anderson has appeared in over 100 games in her career as a pitcher with a school-record 36 in the 2008 campaign.She has amassed a 2.60 career ERA and 31 career victories, including 56 complete games, with 284 strikeouts compared to just 136 walks.
Off the field, Anderson has been an outstanding student and member of the community. Last season selected to the VaSID Academic All-State Team, she possesses a 3.571 GPA as an accounting major. She is a three-year member of Mason's Student-Athlete Advisory Council and has participated in numerous community service activities. Along with her teammates, the softball team won the athletic department's community service award in 2007-08 and finished runner-up last year.
This marks the fourth year for the softball division of the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, which will be will announced at the NCAA Women's College World Series in June. University of Florida pitcher Stacey Nelson received the award for the 2009 season and Virginia Tech pitcher Angela Tincher took home the 2008 honor. In 2007, University of Arizona outfielder Caitlin Lowe won the inaugural softball award.
