Clarion, Pa. - The George Mason wrestling team opened their season competing at the Clarion Open on Saturday, November 6th. Mason competed in the 133, 141, 149, 157, 165, 174, and the heavyweight class. The matches were in bracket format with a consolation bracket as well.
In the 133, John Delgado lost to Justis Flamio of Navy in a 17-5 decision, but won one of two matches in the consolation bracket. He won a 3-2 decision against Tim Hubbard of Mercyhur and lost a 3-2 decision to Devin Cook of Clarion, who ultimately finished in 5th place overall.
Brian Benton competed in the 141 and lost his first match against Army's John Balanger, 9-4. He then went on to beat Ben Hunter of Navy, 5-2, but lost a close match to Jordan Beverly of Rutgers, 1-0.
At the 149 weight class Shohei Takagi had a fall against Joey Walters (Army). Takagi then went on to beat Evan Dahl (Mercyhur) in a 3-0 decision, and ultimately was knocked out of the bracket in an 8-2 decision to Luke Rugoloso (Rutgers).
Ty Knepp and Aaron Keeton both competed in the 157 weight class bracket. Knepp fell to Craemer Hedash (Army Prep) in a 2-1 decision to start the tournament. Knepp then won two matches in a row against Kyle Flick (Pittsburgh) in a 15-0 decision and then fellow teammate, Aaron Keeton, in a 1-0 decision. He ended up losing to Troy Reaghard of Pittsburgh, 8-6. Keeton won his first match, 7-1, against Kenneth Skillman (Army), but lost to Matt Jackson of Navy in a 4-3 decision. He then went on to beat Dylan Wisner (Mercyhur), 5-2, and lost to Ty Knepp after this.
Jimmy Kaden finished third in the 165 weight class winning four matches. He beat Alec Marsico (Navy Prep) (10-0), Evan Brewer (Rutgers) (fall), Nathan Reese (Shippens) (7-2) and beat Andrik Cruz (Independent) (8-2) in the third place match. His only loss came to eventual champion, Adam Counterman of Pittsburgh in a 5-1 decision.
Greg Scott won two matches and lost two in the 174 class. His two wins came at the beginning when he defeated Zach Hogentogler (Shippens) in a 9-0 decision and Scott Joseph (Clarion) in a 8-7 decision. He lost to Daniel Hiller (Navy Prep), 3-0, and to Ryan Darch (Clarion), 2-1.
Kyle Burke and Hunter Manspile competed in the heavyweight class together. Burke won a 5-4 decision against Brendan Kahle (Navy Prep), lost to Mike Landis (Navy) in a 4-1 decision and was eliminated against Drake Kowcheck (Wliberty) in a fall. Maspile won three and lost two of his five total matches. His wins came against Cyrill Parham (Theil) (16-0), Mike Nulph (Thiel) (3-2), and Jacob Nale (Shippens) (2-1). He lost to Quintas McCorkle (Clarion) (6-3), and Daniel Fultz (Shippens) in a fall.
George Mason will return to the mat this Saturday, November 13 at the Hershey Duals in Hershey, Pa. The matches are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
