Charlottesville, Va. - Some of the men and women from the George Mason cross country teams competed today at the Cavalier Open in Charlottesville, Va. No team scores were recorded and it was a chance for some of the athletes who don't normally get a chance to run to show the team what they can do. The other teams that competed in this event were James Madison, King College, Liberty, Salem International, Team Blitz, VCU, Virginia and an Unattached team from Virginia. This was Mason's final tune-up before the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships next weekend.
There were 44 runners on the men's side and sophomore Joshua Schlickenmeyer was Mason's top finisher, running the 8-kilometer race in 26:12.36, which was good for 14th place. Other top Mason finishers included freshman Taylor Torino who came in 18th with a time of 26:27.21 and junior Andrew McGreal who finished 19th running the race in 26:29.52. Sophomore Sean Nestor finished 24th overall with a time of 26:49.78 and sophomore Jake Morgan ran the race in 27:52.14, which put him in 35th place. Virginia runner, Brett Johnson, won the race with a time of 24:58.76.
Only one runner out of the 37 on the women's side was affiliated with George Mason. Junior Elizabeth Smith finished 23rd, running the 5-kilometer race in a time of 20:53.66. Kathleen Stevens, who was running unattached from Virginia, won the race with a time of 18:26.28.
George Mason's next meet will come at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships next Saturday, November 13 in Louisville, Kentucky. The Championships are set to begin at 11 a.m.
