Cayle Byers Finishes First, Team Finishes Fifth at Navy Classic

Navy Classic Results Get Acrobat Reader

Annapolis, MD - The George Mason wrestling team competed in the Navy Classic Saturday and finished in fifth place out of the seven total teams there. Navy, Bucknell, Bloomsburg, West Virginia, Franklin & Marshall, and Campbell also were in this event. Navy won the competition with 135.5 points, while Mason finished with 21. Cayle Byers and Hunter Manspile were Mason's two place winners on the day. Mason competed in the 133, 149, 157, 174, 197, and the heavyweight class.

Ryan Hunsberger took place in the 133 bracket losing 3-0 in his first match to Tyler Sackett (Navy). He was then eliminated by Nick Wilcox (Bloomsburg), who finished in fourth place, in a fall.

In the 149 weight class, Shohei Takagi lost a 4-1 decision to Tyler White (Navy), but then went on to string two consecutive wins together. His first win came with a 16-0 technical fall against Darien Peele (Campbell) and his second win came in a 7-5 decision against Brandon Loro (WVU). He ended up losing to eventual fourth place finisher, Zach Johnson (Navy), in a fall.

Aaron Keeton finished the 157 pound weight class tournament with a 1-2 record. He lost his first match against Bucknell's Brantley Hooks (who came in second place) in a 7-3 decision. His next match was a win against Ruben Herrera (WVU) in a 3-2 decision. Keeton ultimately fell to Matt Jackson (Navy) in a 3-2 decision. Jackson placed fourth in the weight class.

Greg Scott lost both of his matches in the 174 weight class. His first loss came against Brandon Lintner (WVU) in a 7-4 decision and his second loss was against James Mannier (Navy) where Mannier recorded a fall.

Cayle Byers was very impressive for the second straight meet and won all three matches he took place in, finishing as Champion in the 197 weight class. His first win was against Chance Rauscher (Navy) where he recorded a 19-9 major decision. Ryan Perry (Bloomsburg) was Byers next win, in which he recorded a 6-1 decision against him. In the championship round Byers beat Andrew Buck (Navy), in a 10-5 decision.

Hunter Manspile was the only other Mason wrestler to place in the tournament and finished with a 3-2 record in the heavyweight class. His first match was a loss against Daniel Canfield (Franklin & Marshall) in a 5-2 decision. Manspile went on to win his next two matches. Masnpile defeated Connor Sweeney (Bucknell) in a 5-3 decision and then beat Mike McCarthy (Navy) in a 9-4 decision. Next, Parker Burns of Campbell defeated Manspile in a fall, sending him to the fifth place match where he won in a forfeit against Zac Walsh (Bloomsburg).

The wrestling team will compete again next Saturday, November 27th, at the Northeast Duals in Albany, N.Y.
