After Successful Freshman Year, Ruffin Gears Up for Sophomore Season at Mason

Hegel Qualifies for the IC4A Championships at the Patriot Games

FAIRFAX, Va. - Sophomore Kevin Hegel qualified for the IC4A Championships in the high jump at the Patriot Games, held on Saturday afternoon at the Field House on the campus of George Mason University. A total of four Patriots reached ECAC/IC4A-qualifying marks at the meet.

Hegel recorded a mark of 2.05 meters (6 ft. 8.75 in.) in the event to finish in first place. The jump is a personal best for Hegel. His previous high in the event was 1.95 meters (6 ft. 4.75 in.) during last year's outdoor season.

Sophomore LaVell Handy also recorded a personal best at the meet in the triple jump. Handy, a native of Hampton, Va., topped the field with a leap of 15.20 meters (49 ft. 10.5 in.). His previous best in the event was 15.06 meters (49 ft. 5 in.), set during last year's indoor season. Handy had already qualified for the IC4A Championships in the event at the Hokie Invitational on Jan. 22.

In the 60-meter dash, sophomore Rachaunn Ruffin topped the field in both the preliminary heats and the finals. Ruffin ran a time of 6.93 seconds in heat two to advance to the finals of the event. In the finals, Ruffin blew away the field with a time of 6.85 seconds, a personal best for the Columbia, S.C. native. Ruffin previously qualified for the IC4A Championships in the event at the Father Diamond Invitational.

Also recording first-place finishes for the men's team were Brandon Holmberg in the weight throw (15.26m/50 ft. 0.75 in.), Wesley Sun in the pole vault (4.55m/14 ft. 11 in.) and the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Ja-Vell Bullard, David Verburg, Tom Troxell and Travaughn Baker-Johnson (3:19.98).

On the women's side, freshman Mandissa Marshall earned an ECAC qualifier with a mark of 3.60 meters (11 ft. 9.75 in.). Marshall, who previously qualified for the ECAC Championships at the Father Diamond Invitational, topped the field in the event. Teammates Kelsey Hinz and Colleen McGlade finished second and third, respectively.

Senior Sable Otey competed at the CNU Captain's Invitational on Friday afternoon at the Freeman Center in Newport News, Va. Otey reached an ECAC qualifier in the pentathlon at the meet with a second-place finish (3,453 pts.).

The George Mason men's and women's track and field teams will compete at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York, N.Y. next weekend. The two-day meet will begin on Friday and conclude the following day.
