Maurice Wignall finished in fifth place in the 110-meter hurdles at the 12th IAAF World Championships at Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany on Thursday. Wignall starred for the George Mason University Track and Field team for four seasons before graduating in 2000.
Running for the country of Jamaica, Wignall ran a season-best time of 13.31 seconds to take fifth place, narrowly missing fourth place by one-hundredth of a second to Great Britain's William Sharman. Wignall reached the final of the event with a second-place finish to Sharman in the third heat of the semifinal round, crossing the finish line in 13.43 seconds.
Samyr Laine, an assistant coach for the Mason track and field program, competed at the World Championships in the preliminary round of the triple jump on Sunday, Aug. 16. Competing for the country of Haiti, Laine finished 16th with a mark of 16.34 meters.
