INDIANAPOLIS - As the 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships wrapped up this past weekend at the IU Natatorium, the George Mason swimming team was well represented with four athletes competing in a field of the nation's best swimmers.
Rising sophomores Ashley Danner and Preston Wolter, redshirt senior Eric Knight, and 2007 Mason graduate Tom Koucheravy traveled to the meet to compete for a chance at a berth in next month's World Championships in Rome. While the Patriot contingent did not finish in the top-two of any event to advance, there were a number of outstanding performances.
Danner competed in three events, with her best finish coming in the 100-meter breaststroke. The Springfield, Va., native advanced to the `C' final and finished seventh there with a time of 1:11.34 after posting a time of 1:11.26 in the preliminaries. Danner also finished 50th in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:43.62) and 60th in the 200-meter individual medley (2:24.35).
Koucheravy posted a top-15 finish as well, finishing 14th in the 1,500-meter freestyle with a time of 15:32.56. His other event, the 400-meter freestyle, saw him finish 35th with a time of 3:59.63.
Competing in the 100-meter breaststroke and 200-yard freestyle events, Knight captured 28th and 60th place, respectively. Knight completed the 100 breast in 1:04.96 while touching the wall in 1:56.43 during the 200 free prelims.
Wolter rounded out the group from Mason and he finished 41st in the 400-meter individual medley (4:34.34) and 52nd in the 1,500-meter freestyle, clocking in with a mark of 16:15.03.
