HARRISONBURG, Va. - Freshman Rachael Davies went 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead the George Mason softball team, but the Patriots were unable to hold off James Madison as the Dukes completed a series sweep with a 3-1 victory in Colonial Athletic Association action at JMU Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The loss concludes the Patriots' season with a 16-33 record (2-19 CAA) while the Dukes, who will be the fourth seed in the CAA Championship, ended the regular season with a 32-14 mark (12-8 CAA).
Davies' RBI came in the third inning, as the Patriots took a 1-0 lead when she drove a ball through the left side of the infield, allowing senior Meghan Hill to score from third base. Hill led off the inning with a bunt single and moved over on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout.
JMU answered right back, though, tying the game with Brittany Dyson's leadoff home run in the bottom half of the third. The Dukes scored what proved to be the winning runs two innings later, as Shannon Moxey hit an RBI single to center field. After another base hit, a double steal was successfully executed and pinch runner Megan Forbes stole home plate to make the score 3-1.
The Patriots' best chance to cut the gap came in the sixth, when senior Alison Bryan led off with a single to second base and moved all the way to third before a groundout ended the inning.
Jenny Clohan (16-8) earned the victory for the Dukes as she pitched five innings, allowing one run on three hits while fanning three. Meredith Felts garnered the save as she threw two innings of shutout softball. Junior Becky Anderson (8-22) took the loss in a five-inning start.
