Men Finish Fourth, Women Fifth as CAA Track & Field Championships Conclude

TOWSON, Md. - The George Mason track and field team captured six event titles, wrapping up the final day of competition at the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Johnny Unitas Stadium. The Patriot men finished in fourth place in the team standings, while the women were fifth.

For her efforts, senior Ryann Hendricks was named the Women's Field Co-Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet. Hendricks captured the triple jump title with a distance of 12.66 meters, surpassing the NCAA qualifying mark.

She also finished second in the long jump with an NCAA regional qualifying distance of 6.09 meters. It is the second-straight year that the Chicago, Ill., native has been recognized with the award.

On the men's side, the Patriots were named CAA champions in four different events. Freshman Rachaunn Ruffin's CAA record-tying time of 10.34 in the 100-meter dash, along with his winning time of 21.15 in the 200-meter dash, netted him two gold medals. Ruffin's 100-meter time now ranks him fifth on the program's all-time performance list in the event.

Fellow freshman Ja-Vell Bullard won the 400-meter dash with his time of 47.04, while junior Sam Horn finished first in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 1:52.08.

The Mason relay squad of sophomore Kevin Wilson, junior Marcus Wyche, junior Sam Horn, and Bullard also earned a first-place finish, completing the 4x400-meter relay in 3:12.71.

Mason's women had a number of top-three performances at the meet on Saturday. Freshman Grace Mavugara earned second place in the triple jump with a mark of 12.17 meter, junior Tiara Swindell was third in the 400 (55.18), and junior Asia Odum finished third in the 100-meter hurdles (14.12) and the heptathlon (4,450).

Mason's 4x400 relay of junior Marie Fields, senior Crystal Lawrence, Swindell and Hendricks crossed the line in 3:46.83, good for second place.

For the men, Wilson was third in the 400 (47.49), freshman Tyler Golden was third in the 800 (1:52.22), and sophomore David Wellington was third in the high jump (1.95 meters).

UNC Wilmington earned the men's team crown, while William & Mary was named the women's team champions.

The Patriots will return to action next weekend when they travel to Philadelphia for the historic Penn Relays. The meet will take place at Franklin Field from Friday to Sunday.
