FAIRFAX, Va. - After facing four straight conference foes, the George Mason women's lacrosse team took on a tough nonconference opponent in No. 10 Virginia on Tuesday at George Mason Stadium. The Patriots were unable to pull off the upset against the Cavaliers, falling by a final score of 21-8.

Mason's record stands at 5-8 overall after losing their last four contests. Virginia improved its record to 10-5 on the season with the win.

Things looked bright for Mason at the start when freshman Julianne Tela got loose in the middle of the field, took a pass from sophomore Chelsea Gamble and fired a shot past Virginia goalkeeper Lauren Benner to put the Patriots up by a goal 17 seconds into the contest. The goal was Tela's 14th of the season.

After Tela's goal to open the game, the Cavaliers took control, scoring nine goals over the next 22:13 to put the Patriots at an eight-goal disadvantage. Mason entered the break trailing 10-3.

Virginia put the game out of reach in the second half, going on a 10-1 spurt over the first 19:55 of the half. Trailing 20-4, Mason closed the game with four of the last five goals to make the final score 21-8.

Freshman Emily Ellisen scored three goals to lead the Patriot attack. Junior Megan Udovich added two goals in the contest. Sophomore Madalyn Jamison led Mason in points with a goal and three assists.

Blair Weymouth, Brittany Kalkstein and Kaitlin Duff each scored four goals for the Cavaliers. Whitaker Hager added three scores for Virginia, which outshot Mason 32-16 in the game.
