George Mason jumped out to an early six-goal lead but was unable to hold on for the win, losing by a final score of 17-16 in overtime to William and Mary in Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium. The Patriots have lost their last three contests by a total of three goals, with two of those three losses coming in overtime.
Tribe (7-6, 3-1 CAA) sophomore Grace Golden scored her 32nd goal of the year after 1:14 elapsed in overtime for the game-winner. Mason (5-7, 1-3 CAA) was unable to score a goal during the six-minute overtime period. William and Mary held the Patriots scoreless for the final 8:20 of regulation to rally from a two-goal deficit and force overtime.
George Mason took control of the match from the opening draw, scoring the game's first five goals before William and Mary got on the scoreboard off of a Molly Wannen free-position goal with 21:33 remaining in the first half. After Wannen found the back of the net, the Patriots extended their lead to 7-1 when Megan Udovich and Brittany Berger scored back-to-back goals.
The Tribe cut into the deficit leading up to halftime, outscoring the Patriots 5-2 to make the score 9-6 with 3:12 left in the half. With 28 seconds remaining in the half, junior attacker Megan Udovich scored a free-position goal to give Mason a 10-6 advantage at the break.
Once the second half got underway, William and Mary went on an 8-3 run to take its first lead of the day at 14-13. Sophomore Maggie Anderson's 23rd goal of the season put the Tribe ahead with 13:48 left in the game. Following Anderson's goal, the Patriots regained the lead with a 3-0 spurt to take a 16-14 advantage. Brittany Berger, Udovich and Madalyn Jamison all scored goals during the run. However, the Patriots were unable to hold onto the lead as William and Mary scored the final two goals of the game to force overtime.
Udovich scored six goals to pace the Patriot attack. Brittany Berger added five and Jamison chipped in three. Jamison added a team-high three assists. Senior midfielder Alana Chan led Mason in draw controls with five and caused turnovers with four. Senior defender Maggie Bridges recorded six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior Sara Longobucco played all 66 minutes in goal and made nine saves.
Golden (4), Wannen (3), Anderson (3), Katherine Rees (3) and Ashley Holofcener (2) all scored multiple goals for the Tribe. Holofcener and Rees both added three assists in the contest. Sophomore Emily Geary made eight saves, including two in overtime, in 66 minutes in goal.
The Patriots take a break from their Colonial Athletic Association schedule to take on the University of Virginia on Tuesday, April 14 at George Mason Stadium. The opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m.
