NORFOLK, Va. -
George Mason scored the final four goals of the game but its comeback effort fell short as the Patriots lost by a final score of 12-11 to the Old Dominion Monarchs in Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at Foreman Field in Norfolk, Va. The Patriots have lost their last two games by a total of two goals.
After falling behind 12-7 when Old Dominion's Ashley Kellogg connected on a free-position shot with 14:26 remaining in the contest, Mason mounted a furious comeback, scoring four goals in a span of five minutes to cut the deficit to a single goal. Sophomore attacker Madalyn Jamison started the spurt with her 22nd goal of the season off a free-position shot with 13:23 remaining.
Senior Alana Chan scored 16 seconds later and freshman Emily Ellisen followed that up by finding the back of the net off an assist from Megan Udovich to cut the Monarchs' lead to 12-10 with 10:45 left in the contest. Jamison provided the bookend to the run with her 23rd goal of the year with 8:02 remaining in the game to cut the score to a single goal. However, the Patriots comeback attempt fell short as they were unable to score again.
Mason (5-6, 1-2 CAA) boasted a balanced attack in the game with three players - Jamison, Chelsea Gamble and Callie Hoyt - all scoring two goals. Junior Sara Longobucco played all 60 minutes in goal, finishing with a total of 10 saves.
Kellogg and Kelly Kimener carried the load for the Old Dominion (8-3, 2-1 CAA) attack, finishing with five and four goals, respectively. Lindsey Belle finished with four caused turnovers and four ground balls for the Monarchs' defensive unit.
After playing its first three conference games on the road, George Mason returns home to take on the William and Mary Tribe on Sunday, April 12 at 1 p.m. in the first CAA game of the year at George Mason Stadium. The Patriots play five consecutive home games to close out their regular season schedule.
