TOWSON, Md. - Sophomore Anush Mooradian drove in an RBI double to put the George Mason softball team ahead at Towson on Sunday, but the Tigers responded with two late runs to earn a 2-1 victory at Towson Center Field.
Mason, which dropped to 13-17 and 0-6 in the CAA, was swept by the Tigers, who improved to 18-9 and 5-1 in conference play.
Mooradian was one of three Mason players to record a hit. Senior Meghan Hill and junior Becky Anderson each finished the day 2-for-3. Towson's offense was led by two-hit days from Sammi DiPompo and Lindsey Kent.
Towson's Shannon Johnston earned her second win of the weekend and improved to 10-4 in a complete-game, five hit performance. For the Patriots, Anderson (7-11) was tagged with the loss after allowing the game-winning run in two and two-thirds innings of work.
After a scoreless first, Mason jumped on the lead as Mooradian lined a Johnston pitch into right center field. The double scored freshman Miranda Cranford, who reached on a passed ball strikeout and advanced into scoring position on an Anderson single.
The Tigers posted the equalizer in the fourth inning, when Marybeth Herrick reached on a throwing error, allowing pinch runner Jocelyn Hall to score. The following inning, Towson took the lead on an RBI double by Stef Streets, as the ball to left center allowed DiPompo to score from first.
Following that, the Patriots did not see a base runner reach until the seventh, when Hill's one-out bunt single put the tying run on base. Hill moved to second on a groundout, but was unable to cross the plate as a fly-out to shortstop ended the game.
Mason will be back in action on Tuesday when it hosts in-state rival Virginia for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at George Mason Field.
