The George Mason baseball team recorded its largest-ever margin of victory in a Colonial Athletic Association game on Saturday afternoon as the Patriots beat the Tribe by 18 runs in the first game of a doubleheader. Mason came out on top of William & Mary 21-3 as the Patriots improved to 18-4 on the year and 3-1 in CAA play.
Mason scored three in the first, five in the second, six in the sixth, four in the seventh, one in the eighth and two in the ninth for their largest offensive output of the season. The 21 hits were also a season high. Chris Henderson was 4 for 5, Spencer Wiggins was 3 for 5, Justin Bour had five RBI and Shane Davis hit a grand slam. Jeremy Haas also had his first collegiate home run in his first at-bat of the season. Kevin Crum (3-2) picked up the win pitching seven innings and allowing just two runs on six hits.
In the first, Wiggins and Henderson singled and Scott Krieger doubled to make it 2-0. Krieger later scored on a wild pitch. In the second, Dan Palumbo doubled and scored on a Brent Weiss single. Wiggins singled and he and Weiss scored on a Henderson triple. After Krieger walked, Henderson scored on a Bour ground out and Krieger scored on a Ryan Soares double.
Down 8-1, William & Mary scored its first run in the bottom of the second when Tyler Stampone doubled, went to third on a fly out and scored on a James Williamson ground out. It stayed 8-1 until the sixth. Ryan Uphouse, Wiggins and Krieger were on with the bases loaded and two outs when Bour singled home Uphouse and Wiggins. After a Soares walk, Davis hit his grand slam to right field for a 14-1 lead. In the seventh, Palumbo and Uphouse led off with singles, Wiggins walked and Henderson singled to make it 15-1. Haas, pinch hitting, was hit to drive in a run and Bour followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Wiggins. Henderson scored when Davis singled through the right side and the right fielder misplayed the ball.
In the bottom of the seventh, Rob Nickle singled and Williamson and Tadd Bower walked and Nickle scored when Sean Aiken grounded into a double play. Mason got the run back in the top of the eighth when Weiss singled, Aaron Tenney doubled and Wiggins hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Weiss. Ryan Pfaeffle came on in relief in the eighth and the Tribe touched him for a run in his two innings. A lead off walk to Stephen Arcure, a double by Kevin Alas and a one-out sacrifice fly by Stampone made it 19-3.
Mason finished the scoring in the ninth when Haas led off with his homer that cleared the scoreboard in left field and Bour followed with a home run to right field for the final runs. The teams were set to play the second game in the doubleheader later on Saturday.
