HAMPTON, Va. - Playing its second doubleheader in as many days against an in-state rival, the George Mason softball team once again came away with a split, falling 5-3 at Hampton before responding with a 7-4 victory over the Pirates.
Mason's record improved to 11-10 after the day's action at Lady Pirates Field.
George Mason had a 2-0 lead in the first game after four and a half innings, thanks to an RBI double from Becky Anderson and a run-scoring single by Alison Bryan, but a four-run fifth inning by Hampton put them ahead for good. Anderson took the loss for Mason, while Bryan led the offense with a 2-for-4 day.
In the second game, the Patriots found the big inning, overcoming a 2-1 Hampton lead with five runs in the fourth inning. Bryan and Kate Bustin hit RBI singles, but the big hit came from a three-run double by Rachael Davies.
Freshman Miranda Cranford earned the victory for Mason.
The Patriots return to action on Sunday when they host Albany for a 3 p.m. tilt at George Mason Field.
