BLACKSBURG, Va. -
A pair of goals in the final 3:52 led Virginia Tech past George Mason by a final score of 10-8 in nonconference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Thompson Field in Blacksburg, Va. Before the 2-0 spurt to close the contest, the Patriots had netted the previous two scores to tie the game at eight.
Trailing 8-6 after the Hokies' Julie Wolflinger scored a free-position goal with 11:30 remaining in the contest, the Patriots mounted a comeback. With 8:47 remaining, senior midfielder Alana Chan found freshman Emily Ellisen open near the goal. Ellisen's shot found its way past Virginia Tech goalkeeper Kari Morrison for her first goal of the game to cut the deficit to one. Mason tied the score at eight on Chan's free-position goal with 4:32 left in the game.
After Chan's goal, Virginia Tech scored twice in a span of 1:51 to put the game away. Allie Emala scored with 3:52 remaining and Liz Carpenter tacked on the final score with 2:01 to go in the contest.
Chan, Ellisen and Callie Hoyt all found the back of the net twice for the Patriots. Senior Maggie Bridges led Mason's defensive unit with two caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Senior Sara Longobucco made 12 saves in 60 minutes in goal as the Patriots dropped their second consecutive contest to start the season.
Rachel Culp scored four goals and added an assist for Virginia Tech. Morrison made 16 saves in 60 minutes in goal as the Hokies improved to 1-4 on the season.
George Mason returns to action on Wednesday, March 4 at 3:30 p.m. against George Washington.
