Mason vs. UT-Arlington Box Score
ORLANDO, Fla. - After splitting its first day of play at the UCF Early Bird Tournament, the George Mason softball team endured two losses on the second day of its season, falling 4-1 to the host Golden Knights before an 8-0 loss to Texas-Arlington. The Patriots fell to 1-3 following the day's action.
In the first game, Mason held the Golden Knights at bay through three innings behind the solid work of junior Becky Anderson (1-1). UCF, though, put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Golden Knights tacked on a run in the fifth and sixth inning, respectively, before an RBI single by freshman Tori Dudley in the seventh ended the shutout bid by Kristina DeMello.
DeMello tossed a complete game, three-hitter to earn the victory, while Anderson was dealt the loss after six innings work, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits. Along with Dudley, freshmen Rachael Davies and Morgan Davis each notched a hit in the game.
The second game of the day saw Mason held to just three hits once again, but the Patriots were unable to plate a run in the loss. UTA jumped on Mason from the outset, scoring six runs in the first inning. Down early, the Patriots had a chance to answer back as freshman Alyssa See led off with a single and advanced all the way to third base with just one out, but she was unable to make it a 6-1 ballgame.
The Mavericks scored another run in the second inning on a home run by Heather Fortenberry, and with Mason unable to answer on the scoreboard, an RBI single by Charne Office put UTA up 8-0 in the fifth. The Patriots were retired in order in the bottom half of the inning to induce a run-rule victory.
Freshman Brianne Pease (0-2) took the loss for Mason, while Cara Hulme earned the shutout victory for the Mavericks. See was one of three Patriots to record a hit in the game, along with Davies and sophomore Anush Mooradian.
Mason will close out its Florida trip on Sunday with a 9 a.m. game against Bradley.
