WASHINGTON, D.C. - The George Mason swimming and diving team recorded 18 event victories en route to a sweep of George Washington on Sunday afternoon at Smith Center. The Mason men registered a 161-132 victory, while the Patriot women won by the score of 171-123.
In their final regular season meet, the Patriots had five athletes win two races. On the men's side, junior Ryan David took home first place in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke with times of 48.39 and 1:00.97, respectively. Freshman Max Tyburski won the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 1:45.82 and 4:49.73.
Three Patriot women were two-time winners as well. Freshman Ashley Danner topped the field in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.52 and won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.28. Junior Caitlin Impink took first place in the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 2:11.23 and 5:09.49, respectively. On the diving board, sophomore Lisa Faulkner swept both events. The reigning CAA Women's Diver of the Week recorded the top scores in the 1-meter and 3-meter dive with marks of 279.15 and 286.75.
Mason's women scored four other event victories. Sophomore Jennifer Kane won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:39.30 and freshman Sophia Graesser took the 200-yard backstroke title with a time of 2:13.35. The Patriots took both team relays, with the 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Nicole Harmon, Danner, Impink and senior Mary Beth Cheslock finishing in 1:50.55. The 400-yard freestyle relay of Danner, Cheslock, sophomore Millie Wannamaker, and Kane scored a time of 3:37.61.
The Mason men also had four additional winners. Sophomore Brad Erickson won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:11.09, senior Ryan Metzker topped the field in the 1-meter dive with a score of 289.58 and freshman Bryan Bahr won the 3-meter dive with a score of 281.25. Additionally, the 200-yard medley relay of David, senior Ross Redcay, junior Tad Ogren and sophomore Spencer Roe took first in 1:39.12.
The Patriots will not return to the pool until February 25, when they host the Colonial Athletic Association Championships from Wednesday to Saturday, February 28 at Jim McKay Natatorium.
