Sophomore Mendbagana Tovuujav finished in fifth place at 174 pounds at the 2009 Nittany Lion Open on Sunday at Rec Hall in University Park, Pa. Tovuujav wrestled to a 4-1 record at the tournament.
The Ulaanbaatar City, Mongolia native began the day with a 7-2 decision over Steve Makin of the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown to advance to the second round. In his next match, Tovuujav took a 4-0 win over Justin Ortega of host Penn State to move on to the quarterfinals. Tovuujav dropped the quarterfinal match to Lehigh's Alex Caruso by a final score of 6-4 to drop down to the consolation bracket.
In the consolation bracket, Tovuujav defeated Todd Porter of Missouri by a 16-7 major decision to make his way into the consolation semifinals. Tovuujav then advanced to the consolation championship with his second victory of the day over Makin, a five-point decision. In the final match of the consolation bracket, Tovuujav took a 4-2 win over Ethan Headlee of Pittsburgh to earn fifth place.
Tovuujav improved his record to 12-3 on the season following the day's action. He earned his first major decision of the year at the tournament.
George Mason will compete in its final tournament of the 2009-10 season until the CAA Championships when the Patriots travel to Greensboro, N.C. for the Southern Scuffle on Dec. 29-30.
