Fairfax, Virginia- November 5, 2009- The George Mason Athletic Department will host Miles for Myles, a 3 mile run/walk to benefit cancer research on Sunday, November 8th at 10 a.m. at George Mason Stadium. The initiative is designed to perpetuate the legacy of leadership of the late Myles Brand, the NCAA president who passed away on Sept. 16 as a result of pancreatic cancer, and to carry on with his valiant fight against cancer.
To participate a $3 donation ($1 for each mile) is being requested. The funds collected will be split among three charitable funds for cancer research - Coaches vs. Cancer (NABC); The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund; and The Myles Brand Endowed Chair for Cancer Research at the Indiana University School of Medicine (Donations for the campaign are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income-tax purposes).
Everyone is welcome to participate in the 3 mile run/walk. This includes students, faculty and members of the community in hopes of supporting cancer research. All ages are encouraged. The walkers and runners will begin and end the event on the George Mason Stadium track.
The NCAA, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics are partnering with the NABC on the initiative honoring Brand. The 3 mile run/walk will be conducted on college campuses across the nation this weekend. The three mile distance is representative of the three divisions of the NCAA.
