Eric Knight, a senior swimmer and Kristen Meier, a sophomore diver, each had tremendous months in October and in honor of their accomplishments, they were named the George Mason Male and Female Athletes of the Month for October.
Knight picked up a total of eight individual first-place finishes during the month of October in Mason's three meets. In the 157.5-142.5 victory over Delaware, he won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke in 57.58 and 2:08.79, respectively, while also winning the 100-yard freestyle in 45.96. The Chesterfield, Va., native was victorious in the 100 breast (58.85) and 200 breast (2:08.65) at Bucknell, and finished first in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke races, touching the wall in 1:05.34 and 2:22.95, while also winning the 100-meter freestyle in 51.95 in the tri-meet against Loyola (Md.) and Navy.
Meier had an outstanding month off the diving board for the Patriots, taking home three straight CAA Diver of the Week awards and capping off October with a record-breaking performance at Bucknell. Against the Bison, the Walden, N.Y., native recorded a new team high in the 1-meter dive with a score of 315.22 which bested her previous school record by over 15 points. In the 3-meter competition, Meier toppled Jamie Downing's school record of 298.50 by scoring 312.45 points to win the event. In the two weeks prior against Delaware and in a tri-meet at Navy, Meier swept the diving events as well.
The previous winner this year of the Male Student Athlete of the Month award was Sean Kelley (Sept., men's soccer) while the previous Female Student Athlete of the Month winner was Tiana Kallenberger (Sept., women's soccer).
