FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason swimming and diving team split its 2009-10 home opener on Saturday afternoon at the Jim McKay Natatorium, as the men defeated Delaware in Colonial Athletic Association action by a 157.5-to-142.5 margin while the women fell 168.5-131.5.
The Patriot men headed into the final two events with the outcome still undecided, but sealed the win by capturing four of the top five places in the penultimate event, the 200-yard individual medley. That was one of the 19 victories the Patriots earned on the afternoon.
Three Patriots were triple-event winners. Senior Eric Knight won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke in 57.58 and 2:08.79, respectively, while also winning the 100-yard freestyle in 45.96. Sophomore Preston Wolter was victorious in the 500-yard (4:44.02) and 1000-yard (9:47.58) freestyle events as well as the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.08). Finally, sophomore Ashley Danner won the 100 and 200 breast in 1:03.39 and 2:19.41, respectively, as well as the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.48.
Another trio of Patriots captured a pair of wins. Sophomore Kristen Meier, the reigning CAA Women's Diver of the Week, swept the board events for the second straight week with scores of 274.34 and 290.17 in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Senior Caitlin Impink won both the 100 free (53.80) and the 200 fly (2:07.27). On the men's side, senior Ryan David earned first-place in the 100-yard backstroke (52.15) and the 200 IM (1:56.55).
Rounding out the Mason winners were junior Jennifer Kane (200 free, 1:55.31), sophomore Max Tyburski (200 free, 1:43.51), and sophomore John Schmitz (1-meter dive, 244.04). Lastly, the 200-yard medley relay of sophomore Nicole Harmon, Danner, Impink and junior Katie Planchak touched the wall first in 1:47.55
The Patriots are back in action next Saturday with a road meet at Bucknell at 1 p.m.
