Freshman 174-pounder Mendbagana Tovuujav was named the CAA Wrestling Rookie of the Week for his efforts during the week ending on Jan. 25, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon. It is the second time Tovuujav has received the honor as he also won the CAA Rookie of the Week award on Jan. 6.
Tovuujav, a native of Ulaanbaatar City, Mongolia, posted a 2-0 record in a pair of dual matches this past week. In the Patriots' 31-12 thrashing of VMI on Thursday, Tovuujav pinned the Keydets' Vincent Gallo in 30 seconds.
On Sunday afternoon at the Field House, Tovuujav earned a 22-8 major decision victory over Columbia's Mike Wolfer. Tovuujav, No. 19 in the country according to Amateur Wrestling News, was on the attack from the opening whistle with five takedowns in the first period and 10 total in the match. Wolfer didn't have a single takedown during the entire contest.
Tovuujav's record stands at 17-5 overall and 10-1 in dual matches this season. Among those 17 wins, he has recorded four falls, one technical fall and four major decisions.
In addition to the Rookie of the Week award, the CAA also announced its Wrestler of the Week award. Hofstra's Jonny Bonilla-Bowman (157) and Old Dominion's Chris Brown (165) split the award this week.
