Six Patriot Rowers Named CRCA National Scholar-Athlete

Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced the scholar athletes for the 2008 season and six Patriots rowers achieved the criteria of excelling in the classroom in addition to on the water. All student-athletes who achieved a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career and rowed for a minimum of 75% of the spring races or racing in a regional conference event were named CRCA National Scholar-Athlete.

Senior rower Amelia Nelson earned the academic honor for the second straight year. The native of Milton, Mass graduated from the nursing school this past May. She rowed for the Varsity 8 for all four years, including her novice year.

Juniors Kathleen Dolan and Jordan Wheatley also earned the award a second time. Dolan is from Shirley, NY and is a music education major. She has been in the Varsity 8 for two years and for the first time in Mason history the V8 won the CAA Championship. Wheatley, captain on the team, is a government and international politics major at Mason. She raced in the second varsity for two years.

Three sophomores earned the academic honor as well, Kathleen Might, Emily Posner and Jessica Sigalas. Might and Sigalas are natives of Northern Virginia and graduates of Bishop O'Connell High School. Might is majoring in foreign language and Sigalas in social work. A native of Glan Allen, Va. Posner is an art and visual technology major.

All three sophomores have been instrumental to the Patriots success on the water as well and should be a part of a successful future for the Mason program. Might raced in the Second Varsity 8 for the second year which won the CAA Championship for the second year and finished fourth at this year's Dad Vail. Posner raced in both Varsity 4 and Second Varsity 8 for the Patriots. Sigalas has raced in the Varsity 8 for two years. She will participate in the US Rowing Open Women's Development Camp at Thompson's Boat Center this summer.

Mason's women's rowing team had a successful season winning their second straight CAA Championship and medaling at the Dad Vail Regatta.
