Laura King, a senior lacrosse player, and Dwight Webley, a freshman track and field athlete, each had tremendous months in April and in recognition of their performances, they were named the George Mason Female and Male Athletes of the Month for April.
King's sensational play throughout the month helped the Patriots earn their first trip to the CAA Championship Tournament since 2005. During the month the senior attacker led the team in goals (22), points (27), draw controls (17) and caused turnovers (13). She was named the CAA Player of the Week on April 14 after leading the Patriots to a pair of come-from-behind victories against nationally-ranked Towson and Delaware. The Springfield, Pa. native scored the game-winning goal in three of Mason's five wins during the month, including the final contest of the regular season on April 26 at James Madison, a victory the Patriots needed to advance to the conference tournament. After helping the Patriots to school records for overall wins and CAA wins and its highest ranking in school history, King was named the Mason Female Athlete of the Year.
Webley had a sparkling month in which he earned a Colonial Athletic Association title as well as berths in the IC4A and NCAA East Regional Championships in May. Webley first met the IC4A qualifying distance at the Florida Relays on Apr. 5, as he finished fifth in the long jump B section with a 5.94-meter distance. At the CAA Championships in Williamsburg, Va., Webley took home the gold medal with a first-place 7.26-meter leap in the long jump, which gave him a berth in the NCAA regional meet in the event. He also met the IC4A and NCAA regional qualifying standards with a second-place, 15.11-meter mark in the triple jump. Webley will compete in both events at the IC4A Championships from May 16-18 in Princeton, N.J., as well as the NCAA East Regionals which are being held from May 30-31 at Tallahassee, Fla.
