GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The Patriots golf team shot a team 306 (+18) in the first round of the 2008 Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate on Friday. The three-round tournament is being played at the par 72, 7,102-yard Ironwood Golf & Country Club in North Carolina
The Patriots were led be Clark Bixler, who shot a two-over par 74 and stands tied for 28th overall. J.J. Amoruso is one shot behind Bixler and tied for 34th overall.
Newberry's Daniel Stanley shot a four-under-par 68, while teammate Ben Lown carded a three-under par 69 to give the Indians the lead after round one at Stanley is tied atop the leaderboard with Boston College's Alex Snickenberger who also carded a 68 through 18 holes of competition.
Newberry tallied a team round total of two-under-par 286 and enters Saturday's second round with a four stroke lead over Liberty and an eight-stroke lead over third place St. John's. East Carolina is in fourth place, nine strokes behind the Indians.
Second round competition is scheduled to begin Saturday morning at 8 a.m. with final round play slated for Sunday at 7:30 a.m.
