Brian Fitzgerald is the first Mason player to win an All-CAA selection in the awards 12 year history. He has accumulated a 17-10 record for the season and a 13-5 record in the spring. Fitzgerald competed with Jordan Lipstock and Dan Schneider in doubles to go 13-13 on the season and 9-9 in the spring.
Coach Quam had this to say when asked about his thoughts on Fitzgerald's historical season "Brian plays at a high level consistently. Players have a tendency to have highs and lows and usually lose on those lows. He has managed to adapt on off games, not get down on himself mentally and make adjustments to win the match. As a No.1 player he always plays the best player from the other school and has risen to the challenge. In the beginning of the season he set himself a goal to win twice as much as he loses and has done that."
Brian Fitzgerald came to Mason as a transfer from CAA rival Virginia Commonwealth University after his sophomore year. After sitting out a season he is now a junior and a team captain. Fitzgerald's best matches included a hard fought match against Howard's Brown, where Fitzgerald won 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), Mount Olive, winning in three, sets 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, and Morgan State winning 7-5, 6-1. In all three matches Fitzgerald showcased shots powered past his opponent, graceful drop shots at the net, and a serve that couldn't be returned, but most importantly his adaptability.
Brian Fitzgerald has at least one more match to play in as the Patriots take on Delaware, but currently sits at 12th place in All-time wins for a season with 17, tied for third for wins in the spring with 13, and tied for third for winning percentage in the spring with a .722.
