After having to sit through rainouts on Friday and Saturday, the George Mason baseball team finally took the field on Sunday in its Colonial Athletic Association opener against VCU and the wait was more than worth it as the Patriots swept a doubleheader, beating the Rams 5-4 and 6-2.
In the first game, Mason (4-7, 2-0) took a 4-2 lead into the seventh but the Rams (2-9, 0-2) scored twice in the ninth to tie the game. The Patriots, rebounded, though, scoring in the bottom of the frame to take the win. Chris Henderson drew a two-out walk, stole second, went to third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on a Scott Krieger single to left. Krieger was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored as was Ryan Uphouse. Dan Palumbo had a hit and an RBI while Ryan Soares was 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Dan Jaycox got the start allow one earned run in three and one-third innings. Dan Gerjets allowed two earned runs in three and one-third innings and T.J. O'Grady got the win pitch the final third.
In the second game, Mason and VCU were tied at 2-2 when the Patriots broke the game open. Mason scored twice in the sixth and twice in the eighth to finish the sweep. Krieger was 2 for 4 with a solo homer, Justin Bour was 1 for 4 with a two-run homer and Mark Hill was 2 for 4 with two RBI. Mike Modica earned the win allowing just two earned runs in seven innings, striking out eight while walking three. Jason Koziol picked up the save, allowing just one hit while striking out four in the final two innings.
Mason will play five times this coming week, playing at Longwood on Tuesday, home against Longwood on Thursday, then playing a three-game set at Spuhler Field on Friday, Saturday and Sunday against Georgia State.
