RICHMOND, Va. -
On Saturday afternoon at George Mason Stadium, the twelfth-ranked George Mason women's lacrosse team set a new school record with its fifth consecutive victory in a 14-6 win over Saint Joseph's. For her role in the monumental victory, the CAA named junior attacker Brittany Berger its Player of the Week.
Berger scored six goals on seven shots, tying a career high she set earlier this season in a win over George Washington. Berger also added an assist to give her seven points, tying another career high. The junior also had two caused turnovers and picked up two ground balls in the win.
George Mason's 6-1 record after seven contests is the best start to a season in the 15-year history of the program. With Saturday's win, the Patriots broke a school record that had stood since the 1996 season, when Mason closed its season with four straight wins. Before this season, the Patriots had not won more than three games in a row since that year. The Patriots' five-game winning streak began on March 1 when Mason defeated in-state rival Virginia Tech and has included wins over George Washington, Iona College and then-No. 18 Boston University in addition to Saturday's victory.
Hofstra's Katie Hertsch earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors. The freshman contributed season-highs of five ground balls and four caused turnovers in the Pride's 9-6 loss to Rutgers last Wednesday.
Mason will attempt to extend its school-record winning streak to six when the Patriots play at American at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
