The George Mason baseball team couldn't get its offense going on Friday afternoon as the Patriots took on Marshall in the Baseball on the Beach Tournament at Coastal Carolina. Thundering Herd starter Steve Blevins held Mason to three hits in seven innings while reliever Tyler Gatrell allowed just two hits in the final two as Marshall beat the Patriots, 6-0. Mason starter Dan Jaycox struck out nine in seven innings but the three-run homer he allowed to Blake Sanders in the second proved too much for the Patriots to overcome.
Mason got two hits from Chris Henderson and hits from Ryan Soares, Brent Weiss and Ryan Uphouse. The Patriots threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs as Henderson singled, Scott Krieger reached on an error and Justin Bour walked. But Soares flew out and Weiss struck out to end Mason's only serious threat.
The Patriots will take the field again on Saturday when they take on Western Carolina at 2 p.m.
