FAIRFAX, Va. - Three school records fell on the second day of competition of the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championship, and the George Mason swimming and diving teams secured second place after Thursday's events at the Jim McKay Natatorium. On the men's side, the Patriots trail Towson by a 268-200 point margin, while the women trail first place UNC Wilmington, 264-217.
Senior Matt Kane scored a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, marking a winning time of 4:27.79. Mason picked up another gold medal in the 50-yard freestyle when junior Eric Knight marked his second event win of the championship, swimming to an NCAA B-cut and school record time of 20.00.
Senior Sarah Bizer swam to an NCAA B-cut and second-place time of 23.00 in the 50-yard freestyle, but she was narrowly edged by William & Mary's Katie Radloff, whose A-cut time of 22.61 took first place. However, Bizer's mark did break the team record in that event. Sophomore Caitlin Impink smashed another school record, swimming to a new Mason-best time of 4:55.20 in the 500 free.
The four-day championship continues tomorrow, with trials set for 10 a.m. and finals scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m.
