SUNDAY'S RESULTS: Prelims | Diving | Finals

FAIRFAX, Va. - As the 2008 Patriot Invitational came to a close Sunday evening at the Jim McKay Natatorium, freshman Ashley Danner added another record to her resume while the George Mason swimming and diving team picked up four victories en route to a third-place finish on both the men's and women's sides. UMBC won both the men's and women's titles with 1,117.5 and 861.5 points, respectively.

Mason finished with 511 points on the men's side, trailing the Retrievers and UNC Wilmington (687 points), while the women earned 724 points on the weekend, behind UMBC and the Seahawks of UNCW who tallied 764 points.

Danner claimed first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a meet-record time of 50.68, but it was not her best time of the day. Swimming the opening leg of the Patriots' winning 400-yard freestyle relay, Danner tied the school record held by Sarah Bizer with a time of 50.41, leading the way for juniors Claire Weems, Caitlin Impink and senior Mary Beth Cheslock to take first place with a time of 3:29.45.

The Patriots' two other victories came off the diving board as Mason had another outstanding showing. Freshman Kristin Meier won the 3-meter dive with a score of 253.85, and was joined in the top three by sophomore Lisa Faulkner (243.80) and junior Charlotte Edwards (228.65).

On the men's side, junior Ryan Metzker captured the 1-meter diving crown with a score of 300.05, and was one of five Mason divers in the finals, including freshman Bryan Bahr (2nd, 295.05) and Derrick Butts (4th, 260.15), junior Justin Mallette (5th, 235.60) and freshman Rafael Nicolelis (6th, 219.25).

Mason will not return to the pool in team competition until the new year, when it competes in the Orange Bowl Classic in Key Largo, Fla., on January 3 at noon.
