The Mason men's golf team traveled across the country to participate in the second annual Sycuan Collegiate Invitational in El Cajon, Calif. The tournament first two of three rounds were played today at the par 72, 6,687-yard Willow Glen Golf Course at the Sycuan Resort.
The Patriots began the day at 19th after the first round was completed but bounced back cutting eight strokes off their first round score to stand in 17th place. Mason freshman Josh Apple began the day with a one-under par 71 and in the top 20 overall, but shot a four-over par in the second round to drop to 82nd. Adam Van Houten leads Mason with a two-round one-under par score after carding a 72 in the morning and shooting one-under par in the afternoon. He is tied for 37th overall.
The 20-team field consists of 10 teams ranked in the top 100 in the Golfweek/Sagarin performance index. San Diego University is leading the tournament with a 550 team score (-26), six strokes in front of second place Colorado State, currently 27th in the performance index. The host team San Diego State and No. 34 in the performance index is in sixth place with a 565 (-11).
The Patriots will play the final round on Tuesday.
