BLACKSBURG, Va. -
Junior Ryann Hendricks finished in first place in the triple jump at the Virginia Tech Invitational, held at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. on Jan. 11-12. With the jump, Hendricks qualified provisionally for the NCAA Track and Field Championships, scheduled for March 14-15 on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.
With a personal-best leap of 12.65 meters (41 ft. 6 in.), Hendricks also qualified for the ECAC Championships in the event. The native of Chicago, Ill. was the only athlete to reach the NCAA provisional qualifying standard at the meet. The runner-up in the event, East Carolina's Camelia Morman, registered a leap of 12.45 meters (40 ft. 10.25 in.).
In the 55-meter hurdles, sophomore Asia Odum set a new personal standard with a time of 8.26 seconds in the preliminary heats, qualifying her for the ECAC Championships in the event. The time shattered her previous personal best of 8.79 seconds.
On the men's side, senior Ryan McCoy earned first-place honors in the triple jump with a leap of 15.66 meters. With the leap, McCoy hit the NCAA provisional qualifying standard for the second consecutive week. He also reached the mark at last weekend's Father Diamond Invitational at the Fieldhouse.
Sophomore Sam Horn finished in fifth place in the 1000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 2:27.59. The time qualified Horn for the IC4A Championships in the event.
Senior Brian Hay also hit the IC4A qualifying standard in the 55-meter hurdles, although he already qualified for the championship meet last week in the short hurdles. Hay finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.43 seconds in the finals. He finished the race in 7.49 seconds in the preliminary heats to advance to the finals.
In the relay events, the women's team finished third in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:38.97, finishing behind Virginia Tech and Virginia. The men's team qualified for the IC4A Championships in the distance medley relay with its third-place finish, clocking in at 10:01.21.
Next up for the George Mason men's track and field team will be the Penn State National Open, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 19 in University Park, Pa. The women's track and field team will take next weekend off before returning to action at the Patriot Games on Saturday, Jan. 26.
