The George Mason's golf team had to contend with tough competition and weather at the in its first tournament of the year, the Purdue/Midwest Shootout at the Boilermakers' Kampen Course. The Patriots finished 15th in a rain-shortened Shootout as thunderstorms caused suspension of play that lasted over an hour and limited the event from 36 holes to just a single round.
Patriots newcomer Tyler Frank led the Patriots as he carded a 37-39=76 on the par 72, 7,465-yard course. Seniors Clark Bixler and J.J. Amoruso followed shooting 78 and 82 respectively. Marshall Tinsley shot an 84 and Andrew Maryan 85 to finish the scoring for the Green and Gold.
Bowling Green State and Michigan recorded team scores of 293 (+5), with Michigan taking home the team title based on the fifth players' scores as the tie-breaker. The Wolverines' fifth player, Brian Ottenweller outscored Bowling Green State's Russell Goodwin, 79 to 81.
The individual medal was shared by five golfers, Michigan's Tim Schaetzel and Bill Rankin, Bowling Green State's Jace Walker and Andrew Ladwig and Purdue's Johnston. Johnston, a native of Fort Wayne, Ind., picked up co-medalist honors in his first collegiate tournament.
George Mason will travel to Plainview, NY to participate in the McGlaughlin Tournament on September 21-22.
