Fairfax, Va. The George Mason Women's tennis team finished 5-5 on the first day of the 3-2 Mason Invitational. Water on the courts left over from the early morning rain delayed play for a short period of time, but all matches scheduled for today took place.
The Lady Patriots struggled in their morning match, as they faced off against Mary Washington University. The Patriots put up a strong fight, but MWU was able to walk away with all five wins.
Things turned around for Mason in the afternoon though. The Lady Patriots went up against Southern Virginia University, sweeping them for five wins. Winning in singles for Mason was Stacey Berlinger at the No. 1 spot , Sarah Dieffenbach at the No. 2 spot and Ellen Mathis at the No. 3 spot. Doubles teams Julia Moscato and Alex LaCoste, along with, Nora Hetrick and Sidney Cooper each earned victories for Mason. Moscato and LaCoste won by a score of 6-1, 6-3 and Hetrick and Cooper followed up with a 6-2, 6-4 winning scoring.
The Lady Patriots will be in action again tomorrow as they take on Georgetown at 10:15 a.m. and St. Francis at 3:30 p.m. On Sunday Mason will take on George Washington at 10:00 a.m.
